It is very important that we develop leaders and not just managers.
Dr. John C. Maxwell speaks about positional leadership which is the most basic entry level of leadership where people follow you because they have to. This is basically a manager – this person has a title or position of authority and has certain rights to enforce the rules and to tell people to do their jobs.
Positional Leaders or Managers look for security based on title however, more than talent. They don't have any influence, and they can't get people to follow them beyond their defined authority. When you are a positional leader or manager, you are expecting your people to serve you the leader.
Real leadership is more than having been granted authority or having a title or position. Real leaders know the difference between position and influence, and they take the time to get to know the people they are leading, and make the shift from coercion to cooperation, from correction to connection.
They are the type of persons others will gladly and confidently follow, because they communicate and connect with others, they build relationships with the people they lead, and they develop their people and empower them to become leaders themselves.
Question to ask yourself: Are you a leader as well as a manager? Or do you only manage, and not lead your people?
